I met up with a dozen members of the all-female motorcycle club Hot Rides. They had just returned from Marin on one of their bi-monthly rides. This pack of badass babes who like “smoky, loud, fast, two-wheeled things,” as member Dana Carrison puts it, keeps growing as they continue to meet other women in the city who ride. There is no initiation process, just one simple rule: You have to be hot to ride.

The group is the brainchild of Katie Sue Ambellan and Lea Sabado. Katie explains that Hot Rides is about “being in a group and having pack mentality, about revving it up and riding motorcycles in high heels, about doing something that is dangerous and dangerously fun and sharing it with other talented ladies.”

Rider Celisse Müller tells me: “There is nothing like mobbing up and down dark San Francisco streets wearing furs, red lipstick and black eyeliner, and revving and honking with a pack of beautiful women – on beautiful bikes – like a pack of wild banshees.”

There’s something really refreshing about meeting other girls who like to challenge stereotypes and aren’t afraid to get dirty, ride motorcycles, and shoot rifles in a dress. It’s clear that all of these girls have had outside male motorcycle influences, but each of them got tired of “riding bitch” and ditched the backseat to get behind the handlebars.

I instantly fell in love with these girls and what they stood for. The following week after our meeting, Celisse gave me my first motorcycle lesson in an empty parking lot on her Honda CB360. Making a wrong turn to find myself on the main road was a thrilling experience, to say the least, but balancing on the back of Harley-Davidson FXR while photographing a group of hot chicks riding across the Bay Bridge was one for the history books.

How did you get into riding motorcycles?
My dad used to race motorbikes in his younger days, so I think the passion for riding is in my blood. The first time I actually got on a bike I was about 20. It was instant love.

When you’re not riding, what would we most likely find you doing?
Playing mad scientist in my kitchen, mixing up formulas, tinctures, and topical things. I also like to get out and forage medicinal plants. You'll probably also find me reading, researching a lot, and drinking whiskey.

How did you get into riding motorcycles?
I got into vintage scooters because of an ex-boyfriend and was in a gang called The Creeps with Lea Sabado! We started as a moped gang and then moved on to scoots and then to motorcycles. Riding has been the perfect way to get around SF, but also to connect with the city on a very personal level.

When you’re not riding, what would we most likely find you doing?
I am in school during the week and I work with kids all over SF. My boyfriend and I frequently escape to the beaches. He surfs, I am learning. I love music and go to as many live shows as I can. Oh, and I have a dog named Beau – he is a Pomeranian and very fluffy and funny.

How did you get into riding motorcycles?
I got into motorcycles through friend, former roommate, and fellow Hot Rider Lea Sabado. She and her boyfriend offered to help me build a Vespa, but I eventually sold it for a running motorcycle. That's when I got Baby.

When you’re not riding, what would we most likely find you doing?
Sailing, riding my bike, making bad jokes, drinking coffee, reading, or playing piano.

My boyfriend has a motorcycle, and riding around with him was awesome so I got hooked and wanted one of my own to ride. Now I am already looking for my next bigger, faster bike!

When you’re not riding, what would we most likely find you doing?
Going to see bands play, checking out art galleries, having dinner with friends, or grabbing drinks at one of my favorite neighborhood bars.

I swapped out my car and bought my scooter when I first moved to the city, which has been one of the best decisions I've ever made.

When you’re not riding, what would we most likely find you doing?
Thrift shopping in random outskirts of the city, illegally going over bridges my scooter's not fast enough to ride on, making dudes ride bitch.

I’ve ridden horses my whole life and figured that a motorcycle would be like a city horse. I saw this vintage two-stroke Yamaha I really liked on Craigslist so I bought it that day and started riding it the next!

Slinging drinks at the Hemlock or Casanova, working on marine invertebrate systematics at the California Academy of Sciences, or taking care of the Presidio Police horses. I manage to stay pretty busy!

I see no safety equipment and to the chick riding with just stockings and hot pants: When you're going to turn into road pizza, I hope your boyfriend still loves you. Put on some fucking riding gear and get real, and less glamourous. Stupid article. Safety first. Have a nice day, and ride safely, not fashionably.

I'm confused as to what "conventions" are being defied and what exactly is "badass". Yes they are all very pretty and they all have very cool bikes and I'm sure they are all very lovely people. The defining initiation of "being hot" seems to be just that; a very age old convention.

If you are a competent rider, I say ride in whatever you would like! The risk is your own and risks are worth taking for a bit of excitement.

Hi Celisse, do you think I should have to pay for your skin grafts after you look like a pizza and your BF dumps you, just because you decided to wear a whale tail and stockings and get clipped by a driver? I don't think so. Nice try baby. Put some gear on, or don't ride.

PS note how I'm being personally demeaning by calling you baby. That was on purpose because of that mentality. Grow up, and out of fashion and respect safety.

Ok, well I'm done too. Just be safe OK? :(
It's all I'm asking. Who really likes to be an asshole on the Internet? Not me, but about motorcycle safety, yeah I am one :) See you at zeitgiest, probably looking fine. LOL

While I do agree that proper protective gear is a great thing (though the fact that the attire in the pictures as well as the video were for a photo shoot probably makes the attire shown slightly more glamorous than everyday riding) I'm just glad to see more women on motorcycles!

In reference to the "conventions" being broken... not all of us female riders have a mullet and construction boots, which is a common stereotype.

And cryptomail, if you didnt want to be an a-hole on the internet, you probably should have stopped right after your first sentence. We get your point but there's no need to be rude about it.

Ride on ladies!

My conventional behavior includes eating pizza, with my babes.

And little did you all know, my leggings are a shock-absorbing liner. No, really.

Love that high-pipe Yamaha, but at least one of you needs to get a British bike, preferably a real vintage one of a more obscure make than Triumph or Norton.

There's always a turkey that comments about proper gear or the lack of. It's your body, do as you wish.

With all that vintage iron, do you have a token male mechanic?

You all look just great on those bikes! Only two comments: A scooter? Come on, I know we all loved these things when they were cheap and we were like 16 years old, but seriously - there are so many great bikes out there for nearly the same amount of money...
Second thought: I know I wont earn any browny points but seriously: Do consider wearing something else for riding, especially on your beautiful long legs. About ten years i made that mistake that every biker makes at least once. I survived, but it was an absolutely nasty experience to stand up from under the bike only to discover i could see my own knee cap shimmering white and red through the tatters of my jeans. Trust me, you newer want to see that! And the leg will newer look the same after that...

I appreciate the concern about safety but this is a PHOTO SHOOT.
Conventionally women ride on the back of mens' bikes. Unconventionally, on their own bikes with a pack of other women.
I think anyone who rides a motorcycle in SF is at least a little 'badass'. It's dangerous, difficult, and fun ;)
The scooter is mostly for making fun of - sorry Abby! haha!
Great to hear people out there like the article.

Yeah! It's great to see a story about women on bikes. Very bold, and inspires me, as a very new rider (working on getting my license). I agree that their outfits are not probably everyday wear (hey, hot ladies gotta dress up for a photoshoot!). :)

Otherwise, I'm sure they take precaution to wear proper gear.

My GF has a slightly modified 2000 SV650 Naked. Looks like a Ducati and goes like a bat outta hell (sprockets were changed). Comfy as hell too. I'd like to see more gals on contemporary motorcycles - they're awesome, ya know, with modern tech and engineering. :)

Ease up, man. It's a fucking photoshoot not a track day.

Not much for letting people make their own decisions, huh?

People like you destroy individual freedoms.

You'll probably be yelling the loudest the day protect bubbles and third wheels become mandatory motorcycle safety equipment.
