Waters at BAMM.tv

Last week I was thinking: you know what I could really get into? A secret acoustic set in a video production studio that was once a Burning Man party house. It's about time. And, hey, dreams do come true: I went to such an event last night. After a little disorientation at the intersection of South Van Ness and Mission, my friend Sam and I finally found our way to the BAMM.tv headquarters in a quiet SOMA alley.

Noise Pop and Audyssey were presenting a special acoustic set with Waters , the new project from Van Pierszalowski, a once-again local who played with Bay Area band Port O'Brien before heading off to Oslo, Norway, to take a break from years of touring and to swim in the Norwegian fjords.

After a few other stops along the way, Van is now back in San Francisco where he belongs, and his set last night was his first performance as a returned San Francisco resident. Check out this version of one of my favorite tracks, "For The One," shot at our very own Ocean Beach.

OK, so I know this shot's a little blurry, but I had share this with you. See that heavy metal door to the left of Sam? I took this photo from inside a legitimate vault , a relic from the building's Burning Man party days I mentioned earlier. BAMM.tv doesn't have the combination, so they never close the door. I'm not totally into being trapped in a vault (although it would make an awesome story), so I snapped the photo a little hastily.

It's hard to top the vault, but they had some other funky stuff hanging around, too. The photos document the adventures of an aggressive plastic shark that accompanies the video crew on the road with touring bands.

Settin' up. One of the great BAMM.tv guys was operating a camera from that tiny upstairs room (to the left of the mohawk).

Waters6

Can you tell they turned on the fog machine? Waters played an awesome set of seven songs, all a bit less rock and roll than his traditional style. Van jokingly apologized for squirming in his seat, explaining that the band is usually more rambunctious. The sound was great: melodic and upbeat but contemplative.

Waters8

For the final two songs, the band invited a few of their friends onstage to sing back-up vocals, providing a mellow complement to Van's energy (which you can see on his face up there).

Out in the Light is Waters' first album, which you can stream or buy on the Waters website. He'll be kicking off a US tour at SXSW this year.

The set, after the fog had cleared. Thanks to Waters, Noise Pop, Audyssey and BAMM.tv for a really fun night!
