The Disposable Film Festival

If you've been living in San Francisco long enough, you might notice that at almost any time of the year, there's at least one film festival happening, if not multiple ones simultaneously. Not that I'm complaining -- I love that there's always something interesting to see -- but it's easy to take all of these movie happenings for granted. The upcoming Disposable Film Festival, however, is one that stands apart from the rest: Its films could've been made on an iPhone.

Started in 2007 by Eric Slatkin and Carlton Evans, the Disposable Film Festival finds beauty in short features made on inexpensive devices. That means web cams, cell phones, Flip video cameras, and other cheap devices that most of us wouldn't consider prime artistic equipment. And all of its films are under 10 minutes; perfect for the attention span of this era (and for the memory card space on your janky phone!). These movies aren't Hollywood blockbusters, but they're a lot more artful and experimental than your average Youtube video. If you're charmed by weird & lo-budget creations, this event is for you.

Here are some videos I liked from last year's DFF that'll give you a taste:

This year's Disposable Film Festival starts on Thursday, March 24 at the Castro Theatre. Aside from this opening night screening, the fest also includes workshops and events. One worth noting is "Turn Your Camera On: A Filmmaking Workshop" at Oddball Film + Video on Sunday, March 27, where you can get tips about making your own disposable film. Who knows, maybe your next iPhone masterpiece will be playing on the big screen next year.
