It’s hardly a secret that when the weather’s nice, you can find a lot of San Franciscans at Dolores Park. And if you’ve been drinking and sunning yourself all day, you’ll most likely find yourself peeing along the J-Church Muni tracks.

As part of a renovation project for the popular park, the city hopes to tackle the bathroom problem by installing more bathrooms.

Taking a cue from France, San Francisco will shell out $15K to install 31 new restroom stalls and one pissoir. The pPod stands seven feet tall and is basically semi-cylinder mesh screens with no backside and very…

Berkeley eccentrics are not like SF eccentrics. The most unconventional residents of this East Bay city tend to have a lot more political gusto, are more concentrated in a particular area (near the UC Berkeley campus), and probably did a lot more drugs. Still, these characters are cherished by the community, kinda like how you still love your weird, smelly uncle. Since The Bold Italic and San Francisco are home to so many proud Bears (Cal Bears, gay bears, and gay Cal Bears), we present a list of Berkeley’s most notable eccentrics.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “do well by doing good,” the mantra of social entrepreneurs who believe that you can make bank while still helping the world. Socially-minded San Franciscans can now add “while doing each other” to that mantra, as Project Fixup’s Dates for Good campaign launches today.

Until February 23, single do-gooders can choose a nonprofit to “date for,” meaning 100% of their $20 Project Fixup fee will go to their organization of choice. The matchmakers at Project Fixup will then connect them with someone who’s dating for the same nonprofit or a similar one. …

The second annual CityLab — a two-day summit on the principles and policies defining the cities of the future — took place in Los Angeles earlier this week (Sept. 28–30) with a giddy enthusiasm for urbanism that could mistakenly bely the serious intentions of its global roster of civic leaders, urbanism visionaries, city planners, and some of Angeleno’s creative finest in attendance.

Founded by Bloomberg Philanthropies and hosted by The Atlantic and the Aspen Institute this year’s summit included attendees LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, Athens…

Incredible work is being done out there every day to improve our streets, our neighbors, and our spirits. If you haven’t already, take a look around and consider lending a hand, some time, or even your expertise to make a bigger impact than the one you may be making already.

(Disclaimer: In no way can this list begin to cover all of the great nonprofits in the Bay Area. In fact, I work for one myself that is not included here. The hope is that you’ll be inspired by the work being done to support the Bay Area, even if…

We all know San Francisco ain’t cheap, but it was a shocker to read our mayor suggesting that the middle class in San Francisco makes a baseline salary of $80,000 a year. Time Magazine did a great Q&A with Ed Lee, asking him the tough questions about class tensions in this city. One question focused on why SF has taken so long to build more housing. Lee’s answer put the reasons in the context of income levels:

“Our city did pretty good in investing in low-income housing and trying to do as much as we could for the homeless. That…

When I heard about a community of floating homes, rocking on waves and only a 25-minute walk from downtown, I figured there wasn’t much of a story: some nuts living on the water. But I discovered that locals and day-trippers alike had never heard of these houseboats, or even of the body of water on which they rested. And that’s the beauty of San Francisco’s only floating community: anonymity.

The homes sit on a canal historically known as Mission Creek in a neighborhood rechristened in 1998 as Mission Bay. Today, the only water here that hasn’t been pushed out by…
