The vast majority of this week has made us wish we were few leagues under the sea — free of manically refreshing The New York Times every two minutes or doomscrolling through Twitter at all hours of the night.
But through the uncountable amount of calories and waves of crippling anxiety, the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Twitter feed — featuring all the calming marine life—has steadied our stress eating and helped fill our serotonin reserves. (I mean… just look at that bashful octopus!)

Between the constant presence of wildfire smoke and stifling 100-plus degree temperatures, Bay Area residents have grown accustomed to the fact that exiting one’s home feels like sticking one’s head into a barbecue grill.
But this morning, we were treated to something new: a bright crimson sky and raining ash, which has bathed the entire region in a sickly, otherworldly orange glow.
Admit it — we’ve all felt for a while like the Apocalypse was nigh. Exiting your home to find the world glowing a sprightly neon orange just seems to confirm it.

After a full day photographing people from a distance in San Francisco last Saturday, I spent the next day over in the East Bay, where I’m originally from.
My first stop was my friend Hannah’s house on the Oakland-Emeryville border. Like my time in SF, I planned to take portraits of people in the East Bay from a safe distance with a very long lens. When I saw Hannah open her door, it was the first good friend I had seen in person since March. …
