Nine lives were lost on May 26, 2021, at a mass shooting in San Jose — which is now our region’s most fatal episode of gun violence
On Wednesday morning around 6:30 a.m., gunfire erupted at a light-rail yard belonging to the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) network on the 100 block of West Younger Avenue at San Pedro Street in downtown San Jose. Police were called to the scene — where they found the shooter dead, and eight victims, who were also all later pronounced deceased. A ninth shooting victim, 49-year-old Alex Ward Fritch, was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition; they have since succumbed to their wounds, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
