As the year comes to an end, we’re finding ourselves grateful for a number of things. First and foremost: We’ve very, very grateful to still be around, publishing hot takes and left-of-center pieces about Bay Area life that might otherwise get a blind eye by, say, more “traditional” publications. (Fuck that shit; fuck all the norms.)

This year, too, y’all showed us just how much you appreciate long-form content in an era of clickbait and 150-word throwaway articles. In 2021, the 47,000-plus subscribed members of this beloved Bay Area pub collectively spent just over 5.5 million minutes reading through our pieces; that’s the number of minutes found in about 10.4 years.

Wow. Just, wow. Again: very grateful for y’all.

As this year comes to a close, we thought it’d be a fun and cute and fresh exercise to comb through 2021’s published content and see what pieces garnered the most “read time.” The following five essays our reader couldn’t get enough of over the past twelve months.
